NRSG 315 Perioperative Elective

 

Welcome to the Perioperative Elective!

 

Aim

 

The aim of the elective is for students to explore aspects of the perioperative environment. Students will also examine the nursing care in the preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative periods.

 

Objectives

 

By the completion of the unit students will be able to:

 

  • Apply previous knowledge and skills to the perioperative environment
  • Acquire an understanding of the; perioperative environment, the perioperative team and the specific responsibilities of the perioperative nurse; effects of surgery and anaesthesia on the patient; complications of surgery and anaesthesia
  • Consolidate clinical skills
  • Consolidate time management and patient documentation skills

Organisation of Elective

 

Each week students in this elective will attend the following:

  • 1 X 1 hour tutorial
  • 1 X 2 hour workshop or equivalent (see explanation below) = total 14 hours
  • 1 X 2 hour nursing laboratory

Elective Assessment (Weighting 35%)

 

Students are required to complete 2 pieces of assessment for this elective.  The two pieces of assessment required for this unit include:

1. Clinical Workbook due Friday 28th September. Weighting: 10%
2. Assignment due Friday 28th September.  Weighting: 25%

 

Clinical Visit

 

Each student will have the opportunity to experience the operating theatre environment at several Sydney Hospitals for 4 hours on one occasion over the semester. This experience (clinical visit) will happen on Wednesday morning commencing at 8am until 12md. Students will undertake this experience in groups of two-six. Students will be allocated for these visits during week 1 workshop/tutorial.  For the remaining hours of the workshop allocation students will be required to complete independent work in the form of a workbook.

1. Workbook

 

The workbook has been designed to assist and guide you throughout your clinical experience in the operating theatre. There will be a series of questions that will highlight key components at each stage of your clinical visit experience. You will be also be required to research information about a number of aspects of perioperative nursing. This information will provide you with a useful resource to help you to understand the perioperative environment and perioperative nursing care. Click here to access the workbook.

 

2. Assignment: Word Limit 1500 words

 

Instructions

Choose a medical condition that requires surgical intervention

You are required to discuss your choice with your lecturers prior to commencing your work

You will need to investigate this medical condition and discuss treatment options found in the literature and in particular varying surgical techniques

You will be required to outline the normal anatomy and the associated pathology resulting in the medical condition you are researching

Any special tests the patient requires before undergoing the surgery and nursing responsibilities associated with these tests

Preoperative preparation of the patient

Outline the surgical procedure that will take place, the types of anaesthesia possible and any special monitoring required

You should also discuss possible complications of this surgery and what specific nursing observations are needed in the postoperative period

Discuss any educational needs for discharge of this patient
