Week 7
Week 7 Lab Activities
Mr Respiggi’s symptoms resolve to the point where he is no longer considered a threat to himself. You are the RN assigned to Mr Respiggi's and prior to his discharge you are required to:
-
Attend to all discharge documentation and identify the appropriate services he will require after discharge
-
Administer rmedications as ordered
Whilst you are administering Mr Respiggi's medications he tells you that ever since he had his IDC removed he has a burning sensation when he urinates. You check his observation chart and notice that his temperature was noted to be 37.9 at 0600 hours but was not recorded in the notes or verbalised during handover. You attend to a urinalysis which indicates he has protein, blood and nitrites in his urine. You report the findings to the ward resident who instructs you to attend a MSU. You attend his temperature again and note it to be 38.5. You notify the resident who states that he will not be able to be discharged and he will require IV antibiotics. You also notify the doctor that he still has an IV cannula which you were just about to remove! You approach Mr Respiggi and notify him of the news. He throws his cup of tea across the room in anger and demands to see a doctor. He threatens to remove his own IV cannula and states "don't bother coming near me with that needle." As the RN assigned to Mr Respiggi what is the appropriate action to take?
Mr Respiggi's urinary problem is exacerbated and he requires to have his IDC reinserted.
