Activity 1

Academic Essay = 25 Marks
Length = 1500 words

Topic:

A friend of yours is 12 weeks pregnant and is looking at her options of where she can have her baby in the Sydney Metropolitan area. She and her partner are considering a home birth and she asks you what do you think? Research your answer and write a written evidenced based response discussing your findings.

To assist in answering this question you may wish to consult the review in the Cochrane Library.

Olsen O, Jewell MD. Home versus hospital birth. Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 1998, Issue 3. Art. No.: CD000352. DOI:10.1002/14651858.CD000352.  (Students can obtain this article through the Cochrane database at the ACU library).

There is no right or wrong answer. Marks will be allocated primarily for your evidence-based support of your answer. Databases should be used to find articles to state your case. Thus you need to search the journals. Please keep in mind that articles obtained through 'Google' searches may not be evidenced based.

Your essay must include:

  • Introduction
  • Body –contains referenced facts that support your answer
  • Conclusion
  • In-Text Referencing and a Reference List identifying references used in the essay (APA guidelines)

A copy of the Assessment Marking Guide and an Assessment Cover Sheet are attached to the maternity outline.

This essay will be due in Week 5, Wednesday 22nd August, 2007 at your normal tutorial time (either 9 or 10am). The essay isto be handed to your tutor.
