Week 11 Lab Activities
Day 4
Mrs. Brown’s operation was successful and her 2 day post-operative stay in ICU uneventful. Today’s morning shift RN reports that the patient has a right pleural catheter and UWSD insitu secondary to a right pleural effusion which was revealed on CXR.
The doctor’s orders are to keep the pleural catheter intact for 24 hours. The expected amount of fluid to be drained is approximately 750mls.
You have been allocated Mrs. Brown on the PM shift. Her current observations are:
HR: 75
BP: 146/80
RR: 18
Sp02: 98% on 3 L/min via nasal prongs
UWSD drainage since insertion: 470mls
Lab Activities
• Cardiac and Respiratory assessment
• UWSD observations
• Dressing to pleural catheter insertion site
• Administer IV antibiotic
• Write a nursing report at the end of your shift.
• Review Multidisciplinary Careplan (MDCP)
