Week 1
Nursing Simulation Laboratories: Contexts of Nursing 2 (NRSG123)
First year Nursing students will be following one case scenario during Semester 2. The Virtual Health Environment, along with tutorials and lectures, will give students the opportunity to implement nursing interventions within the ACU nursing laboratories, explore the theory underpinning those interventions, and utilise the tools adopted by a Registered Nurse to guide nursing interventions.
In preparation for these laboratory sessions please print the “progress notes” form found on ACUOnline and bring it with you to class every week. You will learn how to accurately and legally document your nursing interventions on this form in the Nursing practical class each week.
Week 1: Nursing Admission
Mrs. Chris Jones is a 46 year old woman who has a 2 year history of Non Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus, for which she takes Metformin 500mg bd. This morning she slipped and fell in the bathroom and was unable to summon assistance for some hours. Her daughter found her when she arrived home from University and realising that her mother had a number of injuries, called an ambulance which took her to the nearest hospital. On arrival, a number of diagnostic tests were performed and she was transferred to the orthopaedic unit for continuing care.
Mrs. Jones has injuries to both her forearms and her left hip. You are the RN attending to her on admission to the orthopaedic ward.
This week in the nursing laboratories students will:
- Complete admission documentation and record Mrs. Jones’ baseline assessment on the Multidisciplinary Care Plan (MDCP).
- Complete the falls risk assessment tool and discharge planning information.
- Undertake and document a set of baseline observations.
- Record height, weight and calculate BMI.
- Write an admission summary in the progress notes.
NB Please remember to bring a tub of yoghurt or similar food and a spoon to next week’s lab session.
