Week 5

Week 5: Wound management

Mrs. Jones’ condition remains stable. She is scheduled for theatre tomorrow for repair of her fractured left hip. Her observations are all within normal limits and her bsl was 6.9mmol/litre when last measured. She is being repositioned every two hours to prevent any further skin breakdown.

Mrs. Jones has a laceration on her left forearm which was sutured by the medical officer in Accident and Emergency. It is oozing small amounts haemoserous fluid and needs to be covered with a light dressing. After performing the dressing you assess and document Mrs. Jones’ bsl prior to her evening meal.

This week in the nursing laboratories students will:

  1. Perform a wound dressing using the swabbing technique.
  2. Document the wound assessment and care on the Wound Assessment Chart.
  3. Divide into pairs and practise applying a bandage to wrist and ankle.
  4. Perform a blood sugar assessment on a partner and document the result in Mrs. Jones’ chart.
  5. Document Mrs. Jones’ Nursing care in the progress notes.
